logoPerhaps the greatest power of social media is its ability to incite massive numbers of people to take action for a cause. On a small scale, we saw this with our fellow Kansas Citians rallying to get our city a shot at hosting the World Cup tournament.

On a much bigger and more significant scale, it’s been amazing and uplifting to watch numbers rise for the Red Cross.

Talk about emergency response.

Following the catastrophic earthquake that struck Haiti on Tuesday, the social-media-enhanced relief organization, in conjunction with the State Department, launched a tele-campaign wherein anyone who texts “Haiti” to the number 90999 donates an automatic $10 to efforts to help the millions affected by the disaster.

Just as Twitter and blogs became a means of spreading real-time news about the earthquake, they also became a vehicle for spreading links and info about relief efforts. We found out about the Red Cross text program because of friends talking about it on Twitter.

And as of this morning, Red Cross announced via tweet that the program had raised $3 million in 24 hours.

That’s awesome. But so much more is needed. Here are some links to other Haiti-related resources around the Web.
